David Henley Letters

Abstract

These six documents show David Henley's appointment and service as an Agent of the United States Department of War in the Territory South of the River Ohio from 1793 to 1797. Among the subjects they discuss are pay for the militia stationed in Henley's vicinity, military procurement, the sale of two enslaved individuals, and the actions of local Native Americans.

39th Tennessee Regiment and 3rd Tennessee Militia Muster Rolls

Abstract The first of these muster rolls lists the officers and men serving in the four divisions of the 2nd Battalion of the 39th Tennessee Regiment as of June 20, 1812. The list was compiled by the unit's commander, Thomas Smith, and sent to the Regiment's overall commander, Major Henry Henegar. The second muster roll documents the officers and men serving in the four divisions of the 3rd Tennessee militia as of June 19, 1812. James M. Howry Commission as Colonel Commandant in the Tennessee Militia

Abstract

Tthe original certificate presented to James M. Howry confirming his position as Colonel Commandant in the Tennessee Militia. The document includes a faded seal of the state of Tennessee and is signed in Nashville by Governor William Carroll and the Secretary of State on January 30, 1830. The recipient, Howry, signed on March 29, 1830. Howry signed the back of the certificate while most of the text is on the front.
